I am getting both of them for almost same price (AMD is 20 bucks expensive than intel). But I am sort of confused which one is better. I have heard Intel celeron is not that great. I have never experienced AMD. Not sure which one should I buy. I am not too much concerned about hard disk space more concerned about which one is the better processor in terms of speed, power etc. Heard that amd processors heats up faster. Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated.

Laptop 1: $380
Toshiba c655-s5049
processor: intel celeron
speed: 2.2ghz
system bus: 800mhz
cache memory : 1mb on die level 2
system memory: 2gb
type of memory: ddr3
hard drive: 250gb sata
graphics: intel graphics media accelerator 4500M
battery life: 4.5 hrs

Laptop 2: $400
Toshiba psc16u-002010
processor: amd
processor model: athlon ll dual-core
speed: 2.1ghz
memory: 3gb
memory type: ddr3
hard drive: 320gb
graphics: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250 Graphics
battery life: 3.8 hrs

If those are your only choices, it's no contest.

processor: athlon ll dual-core > intel celeron

hard drive: 320gb > 250gb

graphics: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250 Graphics > intel graphics media accelerator 4500M

The CPU, hard drive and graphics are all better in the Athlon machine, and the extra 1 GB of RAM is worth an added $40 - $50.

I think you can do much better for around the same price. For example, starting tomorrow, Staples has this HP machine for $420 after a $50 mail-in rebate, and it includes a built in webcam.

Full specs on HP.

If you don't have to buy it within the next few days, look for a deal on a similar machine that comes with 4 GB of RAM because they have only 2 RAM slots so you'd have an extra 1 GB stick if you wanted to go to 4 GB.

You mean other than one's a single core CPU and the other's dual? :p

Specs: :)

AMD V120 Processor.

AMD Athlon ll p320.

I meant to mention, before, I build my desktops, but that's not practical for lappies. HP/Compaq is my favorite brand of laptop because I figure most entry level machines are built in the same three or four factories in the orient. Of course, some models are better than others, and you have to do your homework, but once you've picked the compliment of hardware you want, the difference between vendors is the service you get when you need help.

HP/Compaq has always (and I mean ALWAYS) been very helpful when I needed assistance with my own and friends' machines. When your machine is out of warranty, they won't help you on their toll free phone line for no money, but they WILL continue to help you on their live tech chat system. When you contact HP, they say, "How can we help you?"

The other side of that coin is Gateway. When you call them, they say, "What can we sell you?" The first thing they'll do is try to sell you an after-market extended warranty.

Thanks Harvey. Looks like athlon ll is better than v120 in terms of speed and being a dual core. Please correct me if I misunderstood something.

You have it right. I have an HP laptop with a dual core Athlon, and I love it.

I'd recommend doing some homework on this model, G62-340US to see what experience others have had with it. If it looked good with no negative reports, and a friend needed it, right away, I'd recommend it. If you have more time, you may save some bucks on a similar model, but not that much.

Two more features, if you didn't notice:

1. It has an LED backlit screen.

2. You can expand the RAM to 8 GB if you really need that much.
