Unless you had some sort of retrieval software installed, I'd say chances are slim to none that you'll see you laptop again BlazingSaddles, sorry about your loss :(

Thieves should be beaten w/in and inch of their life, allowed to heal and get better and then be beaten again IMHO :|

Try to find it!:) Not real possible or plausible, but it was most likely someone from your hall or wing.
Don?t know if insurance covers it:(

I think it would still be covered under your parents homeowners insurance

Yep. i think computers are usually covered under a normal HO policy upto 3k.
Call your parents and have them call their agent. Your property is covered anywhere in the world usually

Good information ActPrincess.

You should contact your parents and see if they have Home Owners Insurance.

That's good news, thanks for the heads up ActPrincess :)

BlazingSaddles, here's some links on retrieval software for your next laptop:

Computrace®Plus

Stealth Signal

The CyberAngel® Security Software

I hope this helps :)

How stupid do crooks have to be to be caught with that? A simple format ruins all those protections.

Be honest, your chance to get it back is near zero. I am really sorry to hear that.
But what you can do is, check your local paw shop and pay attention to the nearby dorm rooms. You might able to find it if you are lucky. Hope you still remember the serial number.

Wish you luck!

Did you click on any of the links I provided Dudd?

Here's an example of why you should have before posting:

ComputracePlus: FAQs

Q. Can ComputracePlus be removed?
A. The Computrace Agent, which powers the ComputracePlus service, is a low-level utility that is as tamper-resistant as a disk-based utility can be. The Agent cannot be erased off the hard drive by deleting files because it is not visible in file directories. The Agent can survive a hard drive re-format, F-disk command and hard drive re-partitioning. It is the only program on the computer tracking market that can survive such attempts at removing it. The Agent can be removed by an authorized user with the correct password and installation software.

If someone steals my laptop, they're not going to have much fun with it. I have a power-on password, a hard drive password, a Windows password, and documents that are both password protected and encrypted :)

Obviously report it to the police and the college authorities. Did you have insurance for it, or renter's insurance (or something similar through the college)? I'm guessing that'll be your only hope of getting the $$$ back.

Well, if you haven't already done so, CALL THE CAMPUS AND LOCAL POLICE DEPARTMENTS!!! File reports on your laptop. You should be able to call Dell and get the serial number. Check the local newspapers, pawn shops, and eBay auctions. Ask your friends to keep an eye out for it. Regarding the home owner's insurance... it just depends on what company your parents go through. My stuff in the dorm was covered under my parent's policy. If your insurance covers it, they will either give you full or replacement value, depending on the policy, minus the deductable, which is probably $250 to $500. Keep an eye out on the HD forums, and get a new laptop or desktop when a deal comes across. Laptops are nice since they are portable, but they are extremely easy to walk away with, which makes them such attractive targets.

In the future, here are some security tips...

1) NEVER leave your room unlocked w/o someone in it. It only takes a minute to grab a laptop off someone's desk, be out of the room, and down a set of stairs. People on your floor likely won't see a thing, or if they do, won't confront the person. I could walk into some of the dorms I used to live in, walk down the hall looking for unlocked, empty rooms, and be back outside in my car with a laptop in no more than 5 minutes. You may think "I'll only be gone 5 or 10 minutes doing laundry or getting a snack", but it only takes a minute.

2) Consider buying a desktop instead of a laptop. Thieves avoid desktops because they are much harder to make off with, and much less valuable than a laptop. People notice when a person is carrying a computer tower down the hall.

3) IInstall recovery software on the computer. If the computer is put on-line again, it will help find it.

4) Consider getting a lock such that you could cable your computer to your desk.

5) If you get a laptop with a plastic case, consider taking it to an engraver to put your personal information on the bottom. They can actually melt your information into the case.

Good luck.
