don't leave a cd in yur laptop cd drive for a long period of time
the drive on mine kept reading it on and off and i didn't notice for several days
till it wore itself out
all the drive would do then is click
so i took it out and threw it against the wall
cheap laptop stuff
i shoulda used my warranty but i didn't wanna wait 2 weeks while i mailed my laptop to them and waited for it to get back
it was a dvd/cdrw combo drive
it will cost me like 200 bucks to replace it
anyone know where to find these drives cheaper ??
i'm sick of my laptop.... heh 2k isn't worth it desktops are just soo much more fun since i don't go anywhere

Hmmm! I guess you didn't turn off AUTORUN and AUTO INSERT NOTIFICATION? With that done, the only time the CD/DVD/CDRW is checked is briefly on boot - provided you have it in BIOS as a boot device, or if you command it to do so. I leave a music CD in all my CD/DVD drives on laptop and desktops all the time. It speeds the boot cycle by about 15-20 seconds - have done it for over 5 years now and never have had your problem.
If you don't travel, there really isn't much point in having a laptop anyway. :)

I guess the real point is don't lose self-control or it's gonna cost you big.

Check out Hot Deals . . . there was a recent thread regarding notebook DVD-ROMs (don't think it was combo, though) . . . you might also consider a USB external CDRW (to save bucks, especially if you don't travel).
