Laptop w/ built-in RF & RF mouse - do I need the RF adapter?

When I've used a laptop RF port to transfer files, I've had to line the two devices up. I'd like to get a RF mouse & not have to remember to keep the RF adapter around. Can it be done or do I need the adapter? Thanks.
