It has 4gb of ram, and Windows Vista 64-bit. Still, in "system" and task manager etc it shows 2gb of ram present. wtf?

If it helps, I just installed some windows updates to Vista, and in my system window you can get a rating for the computer like 1,2,3,4,5 ... and it told me hardware had been changed so click here to re evaluate or whateveer.

Did you put extra RAM in it? Everything i see, and have seen about that model is that it only has 2GB of RAM.

Or you could download CPU-Z and see what it says (whether you have one or two modules installed).

If you physically open the notebook, you'll be able to see if there are the appropriate number and size of sticks installed.

Do you mean physically opening the laptop and messing with it? No

It's not that hard, turn it off, take out the battery flip it upside down and you'll see a trap door with one screw, usually dead center. Unscrew it and take the plate off. you should see the memory there. They will have lables on them indicating their size.

Quick threadjack---

If a laptop suddenly shows less RAM than it has and reseating the module fixes the problem, that doesn't necessarily mean that there's something physically wrong, does it? Those RAM slots seem pretty firm and hard to budge, so I was surprised when this happened to me recently, was just wondering if "losing" RAM was indicative of anything serious.

I think it's safe to say when hardware falls off the radar to no fault of your own..there's an issue.
