Laptop video problem

I am having a problem with my laptop. Recently while playing WoW my screen went dark, and the laptop would not boot past the windows loading screen. I was able to boot into safe mode, and uninstall the video card. After I did this, the laptop booted normally. However, when I tried to reinstall the drivers for my video card, the same problem occurred. I downloaded the latest drivers from Nvidia with no joy. I also did a clean install of Win 7 and the same problem occurs. As I said the odd thing is that the display works perfectly if it is running as a standard VGA adaptor. I am praying it is a software and not a hardware problem as I cannot afford to replace the card or the laptop right now.

Latop: Gateway FXseries
Video Card: Nvidia 8800M GTS.

Please any help would be appreciated.
