Right now i have a 7900gs. i am thinking to maybe buy a new laptop. What would be the best upgrade. Would a 8600GT be worth it or should i go for a 8700GT. Thnaks for any links posted.

Thanks

holy crap are you serious? that's not even close to worth it in my eyes, you will see little if any improvement in your games, in fact you may lose performance. and for that 8700gt, come on even if it does perform better than a 7900gs it won't be worth the amount of money that it would cost to buy a laptop with that card. i think you should either hold out until nvidia's next-gen mobile cards come out (g9x) or use the money on a desktop gaming computer and keep your current laptop.

well i was thinking sell the laptop i have now for $1400 and pay around $2200 for a new one. so spending around $800. Also would be going from 1400X900 to 1920X1200

in a perect world that would be great but since i work at 3 hotels spanning 75 miles i need to game on the road

Wait till some solid DX10 games come then upgrade to a better laptop. That 7900GS should run any game out there cranked max(or close to it) at 1400x900. It would really be like taking the $800 and setting fire to it. BTW the 8600/8700 would not perform well at all with the latest games at 1920X1200. Of course unless your not picky and can turn the res down quite a bit.

But again just wait.

Wait for at least a 8800M or better, you will lose DX9 performance going from 7900 to 8700, and the 8700 will likely be too slow for reasonable DX10 performance (certainly @ 1680 or 1920!)

I'm in about the same boat. I've got an Inspiron 1705 with a 7900gs, and I was really thinking of picking up a 1720 with the 8600gt on release.....but they're just too slow. I'm sure Dell will be releasing the 8700gt in their inspiron line soon....but the difference just isn't there to justify the price. I'm going to save my money and hold out for something noticeablly better than what I have now.
