At first, I suspected a software or spyware issue, but now I wonder if it could be hw related. No viruses or spyware detected.

Happens: When I boot the laptop, or when I resume from standby.

Frequency: I run into this problem every 3-4 days

Symptoms: Computer slows to a crawl--CPU usage at 99% for one process. Usually that process is SVCHOST.EXE. Sometimes it's Explorer, winlogon, or iexplorer. (Basically, I suspect that whatever the 'top' process is, it ties up the CPU)

It doesn't resolve itself if I don't do anything--I've waited for almost 30 minutes. If I shut down or reboot properly, the problem persists. If I force a shutdown (resetting the laptop while Windows is running), the problem goes away! This is beyond my limited knowledge, so any tips appreciated.

Pentium M--Centrino deal, Mobility Radeon 9700, 512MB
WinXP Pro, MS Office OEM meant for another machine

You're probably getting hacked by a hacker. Unplug the laptop from the internet and make sure all wireless communication is off. Maybe a virus too.

I agree it sounds as if your being hacked. do you run a firewall, and in your internet expolorer settings what security level are you running. Also do you have it set to allow other computers to share data? Have you updated all of your virus software? If Have you updated to SP2 for XP Pro?
