Laptop USB Printer Problem ~ please help!

I have an older laptop (PII) that somehow doesn't want to play nice with my Lexmark X-63. The printer is somehow always busy.
I've heard this problem could be related to PCMCIA cards, but I still can't figure out any fix for this. I've tried the newest drivers and such, but I still can't figure it out. My dad uses the laptop for online real estate listings and such, and he gets frustrated if it doesn't work.
Any help would be appreciated. 😉
