I want to upgrade to a 5400 rpm notebook HDD, but which brand is good and reliable?

Hitachi is awesome when it comes to shock resistance. Go with the 7k100 or 7k60. If 5400 RPM is your flair then Seagate Momentus 5400.3 is a great performer.

Hitachi is Cheaper and faster.

Nice! Is Hitachi reliable as well? I've never own a Hitachi drive, but my 3.5 Seagates are all right.

Hitachi is excellant in the reliablity department. Just be sure to buy a retail box drive so you will get the full warrenty.

So given the option that at this moment I can only upgrade either my RAM or HDD, which would give me the greatest increase? 2GB of RAM or the Hitachi?

I remember Toshiba used to have a 7,2000rpm drive, but they seemed to have stopped making it awhile ago; can't find it anywhere now.

I will not vote unless I know how much RAM you have right now? If you have 512MB or 1GB then I would say Get the Hitachi 7k100. If you have 256MB currently installed then I would say get the Hitachi and 512MB of RAM.

I did the full deal on my little Sony PCG-R505GL. Upgraded from 256MB RAM and a 30GB 4200RPM hard drive. Let me tell you, after a fresh reformat on the 30GB (I couldn't stand it anymore) and ghosting the image to my new Samsung 60GB 5400RPM drive, it ran like a breeeeeeze. The memory was also bottlenecking it as well at 256MB so I added a 512MB stick (which Sony says the laptop doesn't support) and I was running again, beautifully, with 640MB (512+128 integrated). Granted it's only a PIII-M at 1.2GHz but this thing gets beat up coming to high school with me everyday!
