Laptop TV-out?

I'm having trouble linking my laptop to my TV using the tv-out. I'm running an old Dell inspiron 5150 w/ go5200. I have updated the drivers and the computer will recognize the TV, but I can't get a good signal. For a while I was able to get diagnal waves of rainbow colors, but usually all I get is a black screen (TV set to appropriate input).

The only thing i can think of is that I'm connecting using a 4pin S-video to RCA female and then an RCA cable to connect to the TV. Does anyone know if it matters if you use a 4 or 7 pin S-Video? I can't seem to find a good answer with Google. Same with solving my connection problems.

Sounds to me like the adapter you are using is not connecting the right conductors to the RCA input on the TV... try to find the pinout of S video for your laptop, then find an adapter that works properly with that pinout.
