Laptop/TV Audio Help

I can connect my laptop to my TV via a VGA cable. My TV connects to my Home Stereo. I was told to purchase a 3.5mm to phone jack to connect the laptop to the Stereo, which I did but I still cannot get sound from my stereo speakers. I have done everything that I can think of but am no closer than I started. Any suggestions?

there's a specific cable that you can get, it's a 3.5 mm jack to left and right audio RCA jack that can go into the inputs/aux input of you stereo

you can probably pick one of those up at monoprice.com or ebay, I have two of them.

Just to be sure, do headphones work through your laptop output? Make sure it's a 3.5 mm stereo cable. How do you input to your receiver? The possibilities are either through an open input (CD, DVD; just make sure you have that input selected on the receiver) or through external imput. Most laptops don't have a digital out. Check your volume settings both on the receiver and lappy.

I have a Toshiba Satellite A105....yes the 3.5 mm headset works fine from the laptop. I had to purchase the 6.3mm adapter that feeds into the phone jack of my Stereo. For some reason it just doesnt seem right though with this setup. I think I was given bad info because I do have two audio inputs (like the above posts) . I did see a 3.5mm jack to audio inputs at Frys but I bought this one per the advise I was given.

So, you're outputting through a 3.5 mm audio from the laptop (which definitely outputs a signal) to the headphone jack on your receiver? Really bad advice, tell them I said so 😛. Get the cable with 3.5 mm stereo miniplug to stereo RCA (the red and black or red and white connectors). Connect through the DVD/CD (an open digital channel, but newer receivers should be all digital except maybe phono) input of your receiver. That should do you fine.
