Laptop Too Hot To Touch

I just encountered a really weird issue with my HP business laptop. I haven't turned it on in the last 2 days. It's just on my bed sitting there when I noticed the clothes hanging around it were warming up. I then touched the laptop and found it incredibly hot... and couldn't touch it for more than a second.

As a precautionary, I pulled the battery out. Laptop seems to be cooling down right now. What the heck could be going on? Laptop has been OFF for 2 days and isn't hooked up to AC power either. Something tells me the battery suddenly is defective or shorting out? I am hesitant to turn on the PC right now.
 
ah, you should of said that!, Then yea something is going on.

I would take the battery out and not use it, dont even charge it again. It might be damaged.

It probably still was. Happened to my wife's former Gateway once. She told Windows to shut down, and then closed the lid and put it inside her notebook bag. It locked on shut down (I think it tried to apply a Windows update at the same time) so it wasn't actually powered off. She went to use it an hour later and not only was it burning hot, the LCD had even discolored adjacent to the hottest part. She basically opened the lid and it was still on the Windows shut down screen. Had to pop the battery and let it sit for a while.
 
Agree with Zap - a laptop can be "sleeping" and be on. Check the settings as to what happens when you close the lid. A closed lid on a sleeping laptop cuts out one of the main sources of fresh air - the keyboard. If it is sitting on a bed or a pillow, that cuts off the other main source of air - the underside.

Always power OFF when closing the lid, and always operate on a hard surface.
 
I am fairly certain it was off. There was no activity when I re-opened the lid. Power light, fans, everything was off.

As soon as I physically took out the battery pack from the laptop, it started to immediately cool down.

But anyways, I am just going to send it to my IT group at work and have them deal with it.

It could be that it was in some kind of low power mode for most of the time before the battery finally died, thus being off when you looked at it.

That suggests that something was drawing power from the battery. Suggest a detailed review of all your power settings - not just Windows, but the OEM's toolbox as well.
