Hi folks,

wonder if someone could point me in some sort of direction. I have a laptop (15 inch widescreen) with HDMI out that I have hooked up to my 52 inch HDTV and via a wireless keyboard and mouse would like to enable my family to use for general computing. The problem I have is the aspect ratio and resolution options. The HDTV is 1920 by 1080 (16:9) but the laptop is 1920 by 1080 (16:10) so of course the bottom and right/left sides of the laptop display are cut off.

I have been researching with little success and playing with various output resolutions to try to at least each the left & right sides (i.e. no icons being cut off) and the task bar on the TV.

Is there a setting somewhere in the nvidia control panel to change the aspect ratio of the output via HDMI? Or something method.

Appreciate any information or thoughts.

Thanks

HDTVs frequently cut off all the edges ("overscan") of a picture. There should be a place in the TV's menus to turn that off.

It is possible the Laptop is not full HD. If that is the case adjust the TV to the same lower resolution. Aspect ratio and resolution are two different things. Some laptops have screen resolutions that are slightly wider. I know my TV can not be adjusted to a 16:10 aspect ratio, so maybe there is a setting to just automatically stretch to fit the screen. So on the laptop is there no way to adjust the 2nd monitor's aspect ratio and resolution?

We use a laptop for a HTPC. The way we get around the dissimilar resolutions is to just keep the laptop closed and run only the big screen.

Used this way even a junk laptop with a dead screen would still make an excellent HTPC...

The OP says its 1920x1080, which is "Full HD".

Sorry folks

Yes both are full hd and 1920 x 1080

So I think ken deciphered my cryptic thread. SORRY about that

Basically the edges on the left and bottom are cut off, so I will look for the over scan

Thanks

Once again you folks deliver on helping others out. So I went into the nVidia control panel and adjusted the desktop size and position to Resize (Auto Select) and enabled desktop resizing. Adjusting the size manually I got the following resolution to fit: 1862 x 1036.

Thanks again.
