laptop to dvdr

I'm buying a powerbook, 15 inch, have decided that much. The difference between the combo and super drive is 500.00, i was thinking for 500.00 i could get a home thether dvd-r unit

so my question is, can i use imovie/final cut pro and connect my powerbook to a home unit and burn dvd, to me this seems more practical simply becuase not only can i take my camcorder to my laptop and burn dvd's, but record movies/sports from the tv.

any input would be appreciated.

or even might down grade to the ibook, and save the differnce for a projector......
