Laptop suggestions?

Hey everybody, just looking for some laptop suggestions... I've got a Thinkpad 600x (500 mhz, 256 ram) right now, which is fine for just about everything I want to do (word processing, watching movies, etc). Except that the battery is toast, and even with a good battery, I still can only get about 2 hours of runtime, which, to me, is unacceptable. Also, for some reason, the hard drive won't take an NTFS format, so I'm stuck with FAT32.

I was just curious if anybody had any suggestions, either about getting more life/efficiency out of the battery (I'm looking for 4+ hours for plane flights, etc), or an alternative, inexpensive laptop of about the same or smaller dimensions, that has better power efficiency. Screen size really doesn't make a difference to me. My friend's G4 Ibook gets like 6 hours, I'm so jealous... Anyway, thanks in advance for any responses.

What do you consider "inexpensive"? You can probably get a T40s series certified for <$1000. However, theT40s are slightl bigger. You can also consider the X40 for around $1000.
