Ok my setup is as follows:
Desktop wired via ethernet to router. Laptop via internal network adapt to router running Vista.

My internet stopped working and I powered off and got the desktop working. I cannot get the laptop to connect to the net. I tried connecting and it sees the network, and allows me to enter the WEP but after 40 seconds it says connected with no internet access. Good signal strength. Like I said it worked and then didnt.

I tried hooking the laptop to the ethernet cable and it didnt work, no internet.
I tried using a usb wireless network card, no hookup to internet. Both wireless versions will connect to the router and the wireless light comes on, no net connection.

Thinking it was the router wireless, I hooked the desktop to the usb wireless and disconnected its ethernet cable, still worked. So I know its in the laptop.

I try to ping with it, no good, 0 returns.

I tried to ipconfig /release and it wont do it because it says Im not connected.

Its almost like something on the laptop is blocking it but I dont know where. Three different mediums wont connect on it.

Call your ISP for tech support with your network settings. Before you do, drop to the command line (Start > Run > Cmd), and run IPconfig to get your IP settings, and take not of them. That's probably one of the first thing's they'll probably ask you to do.

You can post the result of that back here. Someone may be able to help determine if that uncovers the problem. For example, mine shows:

Windows IP Configuration

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:
  • Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : gateway.2wire.net
    IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.64
    Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.254
Good luck. :)

I already tried that, they were basically no help whatsoever.

Ive tried running ipconfig and it doesnt give me an IP address for the laptop, just a bunch of error messages.

Time to get a real ISP. :(

Did you check to see if your laptop's network adapter is enabled?

Check your laptop's Device Manager to see if there's a question mark or other problem with the adapter?

If so, check Network Connections (in Control Panel) to see if the adapter is enabled.

If so, maybe you can copy the network settings from your working desktop to your laptop.

Hope that helps. :)

Checked the device manager, its all on.

Like I said it will connect to the router, via onboard OR usb network adapt, but thats it it wont allow me to go any further than just "connecting" to it.

Google "repair tcp/ip stack".

I just fixed a friends laptop using this last week. It's a simple fix.

Oh, here's a link.

Now I'm going to off on a related tangent. WEP is practically no security at all. Get your connection problem fixed and then research methods to secure your wireless with some real security.

Is a windows reinstall out of the question here? Have you done a malware scan? Recently installed or uninstalled some programs? Windows updates?

Ive tried about everything everyone has suggested. Ive even tried removing drivers for the network card and no dice. Still same thing. I did notice that there was a windows update that went through, but says the install failed, which makes me wonder if it screwed something up. Not being a Vista guru, Im totally unsucessfull at getting the restore points to work, they keep failing to work.....

I believe my greatest chance of success lies in rolling back the computer. But not sure how to make that work.

Last ditch option will be a reinstall, but I was hoping to avoid it.
