Laptop Speaker Systems

Hi everyone,
I'm looking for a decent 2.0 sound system, that's going to be hooked up to my laptop until i build my new system. I was considering just getting one of those micro-stereo systems, and trying connect my laptop to the AUX input. The benefits of this would be decent sound, and being able to listen to CD's if i felt like it. What kind of sound quality loss should i expect if i try to do something like this?
The other thing I kinda thought would be cool, but definitley haven't thought about is somehow hooking up some decent studio montors like these M-Audio monitors. But i have no idea what kind of amplifier or equipment I'd need to do this.

Thanks,
-Desh

if they're powered, what kind of connection would they have?
Do you have any reccomendations for a good 2.0 system? the main things I'm looking for is sound quality, and volume matters a little.
looking to spend 300 cdn.

I don't know what your needs are, but a pair of quality headphones would probably sound better than anything in this range.

All the headphones i tried so far have had issues,
Technics DH 1200 were too bass heavy
AKG K240s needed a headphone amp because they were too flat,
right now I'm using the SteelSound 5h surround sound headphones.

Well, if you don't want to go the headphone route again, some other options would be

Swan m200s

or a set of bookshelf speakers and some type of amp.

Rocket ELTs are on sale for $149 a pair for example.
Add in a cheap stereo receiver or sonic t-amp and you'd be in business.

I'm not sure about how the quality on your sound output on your laptop though. I've never owned a laptop so I don't have any personal experience to go on, but I'd imagine they would be lacking in some cases. It might end up being the weak link in your system.

Looks like you still need a sub with that setup...I had 4" mid 1" tweeter speakers before...Athena S.5s.

They sounded incredibly thin and nasal...and just plain BAD...without a sub.

Edit: Bad is entirely relative. Nowhere near as bad as computer speakers.

The S.5s only get down to 80hz +/- 3dB.

The Swans are rated down to 55hz, the Rockets to 65hz. I don't see a spec on frequency range for the maudios.

Bass response depends on several things including driver quality and cabinet volume. You very well could be right on lack of bass in the maudios, but they might be decent on their own.

How about thin ones? USB powered is fine. Headphones don't work for me because I am 80% deaf on one side.

Suggestions?

Get a headphone anyway and set the volume to come out to the working ear? If not, I like the swan. I might get one of those.

Yeah, I reckon the Swans would be a good choice.
