I'm looking for the cheapest external sound card (usb/pcmcia) I can get for my laptop that will record midi and pretty high quality analog audio. the built-in in audio hardware just doesn't capture enough sound detail

i use the tascam-US-122 for my recording and it sounds good to my ears. It is USB 1.0 so it can only handle up to 2 tracks recording at a time. I can record in 24 bit and at 48 khz which is better than CD quality (cd = 44khz/16bit)

It has two nice built in preamps for microphones, phantom power for condencers, line in for that kind of equipment, zero latency monitoring (very handy), and midi. its a breat little unit with well designed WDM and ASIO drivers.

lots of people use 'em at www.homerecording.com/bbs check that site out for more reviews.
