Laptop SODIMM - are they all CL2?

Hello

Just have a simple question (hope I'm not posting in the wrong forum).

I wish to upgrade the RAM on my laptop and it specifically says looking for PC100 144 pin SODIMM SDRAM (128/256) CL2 gold contacts.

My question is does the RAM have to be CL2, or is all laptop SODIMM RAM CL2 by default? ( I know in desktops CL2 ram is better because its easier to overclock, performs better also if im not wrong vs CL3 RAM).

I called Sony but I have to say they were kind of clueless about this.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers

CL2 is used because it performs better, but the people that make it don't do it because it can overclock better. 🙂 That's just why people sometimes insist on it.

It may be that the BIOS will only run the memory at CL2. All the memory that Crucial sells as PC100 SODIMM is CL2. Given the limited market compared to desktop modules, there may be primarily CL2 produced rather than multiple lines. But man is that stuff expensive compared to DDR.

Based on Newegg's listings though, not all manufacturers use only CL2. So just make sure you check that. CL2 modules aren't any more expensive than CL3, since that's a minor difference compared to the price jump from having to use old PC100 memory and in a SODIMM module.
