Laptop smoke smell

Can you give some more info on the Laptop itself? Brand? Hardware Specs?

When you say it "crapped out" do you mean the screen went completely blank without power or do you mean the entire laptop stopped working, as in pushing power did not even get the LED to light up or the HDD to spin-up?
 
Sounds like maybe a shorted ribbon cable to the screen if it happened when he repositioned the screen. Who knows what it could have taken with it. Like TY-1 asked, does it boot at all with a blank screen do it do nothing when you hit the power button?
