laptop slows down

my friend has a small business on the side making wooden objects like furniture, plaques (sp?), signs, etc. he uses this machine that allows them to cut designs and text into the wood. this machine is run by a program he has on his laptop and the machine is connected to the laptop by usb cable i think.

lately the laptop has been gradually slowing down and when they look at the task manager, the cpu usage gradually goes up and up and finally hits like 99% all the time. this then causes the cutting machine to stutter and whatever its cutting is affected by it.

he said they rebooted the laptop and the problem started again. they then removed the battery from the laptop for about 30 seconds and then put it back in and then everything worked fine after that for a few hours then it started to slow down again.

there isn't anything extra in task manager that would be causing this. i guess it might be the machine program but it worked fine up until recently. the laptop is never connected to the internet. it is connected by crossover cable to another desktop machine but that one is never connected to the internet either and the only things installed on it are the legally purchased programs that they use to run the machines and some kind of autocad type software.
