Laptop Shutting down

My Laptop has been shutting down ever since yesturday, it seems random when it wants to shut down, sometimes it wont even get to windows before it does, other times it last 15mins. Its a Dell Inspiron 5150, whats confusing me is that when this happens is that the screen shuts off, but the fan, the power light, and laptop seem to still be on, but nothing is working so i have to hold the power switch to shut it off. Ive run a Diagnostic test on the hardwear and everything seemed to be fine. So I formated the HD and reinstalled windows. When i turned the computer on it did the same thing after 2 minutes of running.

Did you try removing the BATTERY and running just on AC?

5150 also had issues with the Thermal Cooling unit running to slow
to keep the CPU cool.

Other things to try is to reseat RAM modules, remove HD, then try powering up.
(be sure to remove Battery and AC before working on laptop)

agree'd

inregards to :
"the screen shuts off, but the fan, the power light, and laptop seem to still be on, but nothing is working "

that happened to my hp 3 years ago, my issue with it though = it wouldnt turn on at all. the problem = i fried the mother board within the same month i bought the machine.

I was using it as a mp3 player while traveling (through the city, walking and on the subway... etc...) and in the middle of summer !
