Laptop Secondary Boot Drive Question

I have a customer that has a Dell Laptop he uses for work and would like to bypass the primary hard drive and boot to a secondary with Windows XP so that he may use his computer for personal use while he?s on the road. Is it possible to boot from a USB hard drive or a hard drive connected to a PCMCIA connection. Has anyone every done this or is there a method that I am not thinking of. Please help. Thank you.
