Laptop screen, vertically spaced bars - frozen.

I have this laptop that I set aside a while ago, just havent had the need to use it. And I don't recall ever damaging it (physically, with water, etc) but I turned it on and used it for a bit.

Eventually the screen does this, or something similar after so many minutes, looks like its overheating to me, but I could be wrong:

It seems to stop responding to all functions, even keyboard functions -- which I think points me in the direction of the overheating, but..

Any ideas? Like I said, I suspect overheating. I haven't ran any diagnostics or even checked temperature yet -- Just throwin it out there.
 
Hook it up to an external monitor. If the problem doesn't show up on the external monitor its probably the LCD.
