Laptop screen is black when resuming from sleep....

Just got this laptop a few weeks ago for $469. It's a great deal but it's a refurb and I think I know why it was originally sent back. Every time I try to resume from sleep mode the screen is black but the backlight is on and the hard drive led lights up like something is happening but the screen never comes back.

I have figured out I can get the screen to come back if I shut the lid and let it to back to sleep then resume again. However, I have to do this each time and it's quite annoying. I can't figure out why it's doing this.

I don't wish to reformat if possible because it comes with a license for PowerDVD so I can play blu-rays and I don't want to lose that.

Any ideas?

Sounds like the system is coming out of sleep (hibernation?) and the desktop (DT) is not being refreshed. Right click the DT & ensure Under Arrange Icons that "Show Desktop Icons" is checked.

Some other possibilities are :
- Generate a batch file to refresh icons/DT and assign it to a hot or function key
- Check Kellys-Korner for a fix: http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
- Might try this: To repair all system files, go to Start/Run, and type: SFC /SCANNOW
