Laptop Screen Intermittent Shutdown

Hi,

Laptop is an HP zt1195.

I've searched through this forum and other forums. I've also search the internet newsgroups. Lots of problems with laptop screens but haven't seen my exact problem.

The screen will turn on then the backlight goes off within a few seconds.
The strange part is that it comes right back when I hit the lid button, as if I close and open the screen. Also true if I actually close and open the screen. But within a few seconds it goes off.

I did not observe flickering or dimming prior to this behavior.

The screen is bright and clear when it's on so I assume the backlight is ok.

The external monitor works fine so I assume the video card is ok.

This leaves the inverter or some other electrical component which is outside my area of knowledge. I did read a post mentioning something about a switch between the battery and power monitor...no clue what that is though.

Any help would be appreciated. My current plan is to replace the inverter since it's cheap and easy to do, but I really don't want to fix something if it's not broken...

Thanks,
RM

Check your power settings in Windows Control Panel. I think that's just the default 5 minute screen blanker. Windows always blanks the screen after 5 minutes by default on laptop installs. However moving the mouse or tapping the keyboard should "wake-up" the screen. Disable it entirely when the computer is connected to AC power. No need for it. You do want it on for battery mode to save power.

Hi. Thanks for the reply.

The blanking will even occur at boot.

For example, if I enter the bios, and wait a few seconds, it blanks. Would the settings in windows have affected operation of the screen while in the bios setup?

The blanking happens within 10 seconds. I've tried resetting power modes in windows but to no avail. Turned power saving off entirely by choosing "Always On". Disabled screen savers as well.

Thanks again.

No, Windows would not be able to affect power saver before it boots.

I think you may have the power saver enabled in BIOS. Normally you want this disabled to allow Windows to control it. Go into BIOS and see if there's a setting for blanking the screen.

Failing that I'm at a total loss. Last act of desperation try resetting the CMOS memory. You'll have to find the service manual online to figure out how. Maybe even a BIOS update in case the firmware is corrupt.

Hope this helps...
