Laptop screen died...what is the problem?

Have an HP pavilion dv9000 that the screen died on. Screen is completely black but the computer still boots to an external monitor. I assumed it was the inverter but I replaced it and that didn't fix the problem. what other things could cause this?
Is it possible the new inverter I got was just bad?

the ribbon cable connecting the screen to the motherboard may also be at fault, and is usually a cheap fix.

i've had a string of 3 bad inverters when trying to replace. often times the ones sold on ebay etc. are used themselves. finally got a good one and it brought the screen back.

Well that's just weird. Turned the notebook on after swapping out a hard drive and all of a sudden the screen works again for the first time in a month. Maybe the ribbon cable or something else is loose.

EDIT: Now it went off again. Can inverters malfunction like that? if it were the backlight it would just simply die correct? Need to rule out as many things as possible here.

If it is the backlight or inverter you will stil be able to see a faint image on your screen if you shine a flashlight on it. It sounds much more likely there is a problem with the ribbon cable. It may be loose from the back of the screen. I've picked up several T-60's from ebay with dead screens and that turned out to be the issue. The DV-6000 series had video card issues but I don't recall anything with the DV-9000.
