Laptop Screen Blacks out

Just recently my dads laptop screen has been going completely black on him. The laptop stays running and if you shine a flashlight on the screen you can still see windows as well as the mouse moving. Sometimes if he closes the laptop and opens it again it will come on for a few seconds. Is it the backlight that has died?

Laptop Model: Gateway MX3701

Laptop was purchased about 3-4 years ago refurbished.
 
Sounds like the backlight - but could also be the backlight inverter.

The only other possibility, and I've seen this in only VERY few cases, is the machines "sleep" switch is shorting or sticking, though usually it only causes the backlight to STAY off when the lid is lifted, not turn off during use.
