Laptop repair question

Double Trouble

I have a compaq 1700us laptop that no longer gets power through the AC connector. The laptop works fine when you put in a charged battery, so everything else is fine, but for some reason the laptop acts like it's not plugged in when you plug it in. I checked the AC adapter to make sure it's OK (it is), so I guess it has to be the systemboard that has an issue (or possibly the power connector on the mobo). Should I just replace the system board myself, or it it worth it to take it to a repair place? What's with the crazy prices for replacement boards anyway? A $400 mobo??? Yipes!

I was also thinking about just getting an external battery charger and just use the batteries (I have 3). Is there such a thing as an external battery charger for the batteries that go with the 1700 series??

Its likely that the power connector came un-soldered from the motherboard, if your skilled enough you might be able to solder it back. Otherwise Motherboard replacement is a possibly a valid option.
