Get an used IBM Thinkpad, around a 900 mHz PIII, 256 meg RAM, and a 30 gig hard drive. This is what I have.

I've seen some refurbed Dell Inspiron 8100 series laptops with a Celeron 2.0, DVD drive, and a 15" screen for right around $900. I'm saving up for one of those.
