Looking for small compact laptop in the $1000 range. The smaller the better. I can go both with or without built in CD/CDRW/DVD drive, but with preferred. Don't want it to be over 5lbs. Any recommendations?

This isn't exactly what you want but it's close

Dell Inspiron 500m for $1,174

Thin and light w/ extended battery life, uses new intel Pentium-M processor. only 5lb, 1.29" thin. Pentium-M 1.3GHz performs close to the P4-M 2GHz!

Inspiron 500m notebook w/ Pentium-M 1.3GHz, 14.1" screen, 512MB, 40GB, CDRW/DVD combo, 802.11b Wireless LAN, Modem/NIC, XP Home for $1599 - $125 dell coupon code - $300 rebate = $1174 w/ free shipping.

Go for the Dells :p I think IBM makes a 1000 notebook too, but I'm not certain. IBM builds a solid notebook. Compaq/HP are cheap, but they are not exactly what I would call high quality.

Avoid the ibooks like the plague, and the PBs aren't that much better. Yes, you can get a 12in PB for 1100, but you can get a 14in Dell for around a 1000, and it can actually run the majority of software. Plus you can drag them to hell and back. :)

Averatec 3150

Not the greatest notebook in the world, but for less than $1000 you won't find a lighter, more compact machine with an optical bay.

From the article:

The Averatec 3150 series' case design sets it apart from everyday thin-and-lights. The 4.5-pound, 10.6-by-9.6-by-1.2-inch notebook is about the same size as its competitors

Read up on the X1000 before you buy. There are a few quirky design "flaws". In the end I was more impressed with the Dell 600m and thats why I got one. If you wait around for a deal on the hot deals forum you should be able to get a 600m for under a grand (I did).

Look at the Dell D400, its less than 4lbs and it has a DVD drive. Its great. Its a little out of your price range, but its worth it.

^^This guy's right on, I love mine.

As for the "design flaws" that ai42's talking about...I guess you're referring to the AC adapter plugging in on the right side of the notebook and the USB ports on the back? This just gets ur wires a bit crossed when using a mouse and AC adapter at the same time, but it's very manageable. I can't think of anything else wrong with it.

I have a new Dell Latitude available at work, but I can't stand the thing. The keyboard feels like it's about to break in half when you type on it, and the touchpad is so small and rigid I get annoyed using it

Not to mention that with the x1000 you get widescreen, and it's several hundred dollars cheaper.
