I am needing to buy a laptop, because my school next semester is going to require everyone to have one in class (don't ask why). I would like something ultra-portable with decent battery life (ideally 2 batteries = 6+hours). I don't want any high end GPU to suck battery and would prefer to have one of the 2mb cache Pentium Ms, what ever the smallest is will be great. I am not much on the 1GHz models as I don't want that slow of performance.

I would like someone that knows something about laptops to point me in the right direction (I don't trust the local CompUSA). I am above average computer hardware literate (desktop side) so don't be afraid to lay technical jargon on me.

Thanks for the help.

PS I have been building my own desktop computers for several years, is it possible to build your own lappy? And where would I go for parts.

Bingo look no futher then then the X or T series with a Dothan CPU from IBM. The T42 has it but the X series still has the 1mb Banias CPU. Don't totally count out the X series though portability can't be beat. Ive owned several makes of laptop from Dell, Gateway, and Compaq. IBM easily has the best build quality of them all. They also have US based tech support from what I hear, only becuase in the 2 years I have owned my X31 I've never had to call in.

Thanks for the recommendations. I was searching through hot deals this morning and saw that Dell had a deal where you saved 700 bucks off a laptop plus free shipping, so that narrowed my search. Since I wanted Ultra portability I went with the M700 with the two extended batteries (about 8hours worth). I also got the 1.6 Dothan, 12.1 WXGA screen, CD/RW-DVD combo, XP pro, 40GB HDD, and a couple other features for about 900 after tax. However I only got the minimum RAM because they wanted way to much for a GB (550 over the 256mb price!!!) so I ordered 1GB of Corsair off newegg for $182, I though it was a good price.

At any rate thanks for the suggestions but price was the determining factor.
