Hi all. My dad is looking for a Lattop and since i've never bought one, i'd thoguth I'd see what your opinions are.
Bascailly he needs a simple one that can run office do email and the internet. Just something simple that he can take on the go.

Anybody have some reccomendations for me? I was looking on the Dell website, but i'm not sure what is good or not in the laptop market.

Thanks all!

nope didn't help. I already searched for "laptop" and none really stated what i should be looking for in a laptop. All i got was posts saying.. Get a Dell/IBM/Toshiba, but not what i should be looking for.

yeedog, start w/ two things in mind, one, what you dad currently needs from the laptop and what he might need in the future [for ex. which processor w/ some headroom built in for the future], and two what his budget will be. The go to some computer online stores such as http://www.dell.com , http://www.gateway.com , and http://www.ibm.com and start w/ the baseline models and configure then to meet you dad's needs & budget. Hope this helps.

Dell and Toshiba are always running some kind of rebates. I use to work as techie, and I had the less amount of problems with these brands. Stay away from Winbook. Nothing but headaches with their line of notebooks. Make sure the laptop you are buying is mobile processor, this will reduce heat and save the life of the battery. See what features your dad might want, DVD, burner, and office is vague term. Is he going be using Power Point, that alone is RAM hog. Set a budget and if its retail brand, take him out to computer retail store and see what he feels comfortable to him.

get the toshiba satelite 1005 from the hotdeal , should be perfect. or if you want cheaper buy a used one on ebay

Experience tell me that you need to know the budget first. Your father needs can be achieved by old models such as Pentium 133Mhz with 64MB RAM. Obviously, no company made this model as brand new anymore. Once you setup budget, then you can narrow down your searching, by looking at specification. For example, do you need all-in-one type, which is heavy or slim one type, which is light, but some peripherals are external and can be troublesome if your father travels alot.
