I'm working on a friend's laptop HP ZE4400which is having all sorts of problems. He told me initially that he was unable to boot up the laptop because it would continually restart before it loaded Windows. I booted the PC up fine, and was able to work with office applications and the only real problem was the touchpad left click button was faulty. I thought to give him the benefit of the doubt I would perform some small hardware checks for the rebooting/problems he described.
I decided to run memtest86 to check the RAM and so I booted into the program and it ran OK for about 20 minutes, and it started showing weird color blocks on the screen. I can't do/see anything so I reboot the PC and it loads memtest up again except the strange colored blocks are immediate this time. I removed the memtest bootable cd and tried to just boot it up normally but it didn't seem like the HP logo on first boot would even come up. I removed the hard drive / ram / battery and ran on AC power and still the same types of problems were encountered. I was able occasionally to get the HP logo screen, but the keyboard seemed unresponsive (caps lock wouldn't turn on the light on the laptop).
I just turned on the laptop and was able to briefly get into the BIOS but then the keyboard stopped working. I turned it off and turned it back on and it turns itself off almost immediately after I turn it on. Help!
