Laptop Randomly Goes To Sleep Mode

This has been happening for a while now, where the laptop will go to sleep seemingly at random. There isn't any one action that I can find that causes this. A push of the power button and it wakes up and continues on its way. Other times it will do to sleep but instantly turn itself back on. No data loss, it returns to wherever it was at the time of the shut down.
But this time it shut down and wouldn't wake up. Totally unresponsive, until I removed the battery and tried running the machine off the AC charger. Started up just fine. Put the battery back in and it is working again. Right now it will run off the battery only, while the unit is plugged in and charging, and with the battery removed.
Odd. Any ideas what might be going on??

Im betting that you never fully & carefully read the user manual for your machine. It has various power managing and protection features (eg, related to battery power, hard drive activity/acceleration, etc.) which need to be understood. In addition, once triggered, recovery of activation from some of these protective control features can be slightly involved (eg, it is not simply restart the machine by pressing the power button). For example, to recover from an autonomously initiated "ProtectSmart" action:

- Unpark your PC

- Once ProtectSmart is activated, to unpark or unlock your hard drive, follow the steps below.

- Hold down the power button for 5 seconds until the power goes off.
- Unplug the A/C Adapter.
- Remove the battery.
- Replace the battery
- Plug in the A/C Adapter.
- Press the power button to turn on the PC.

The PC should boot into Windows.

I have read the user manual. The laptop is almost 3 years old and I'm quite familiar with it. This random sleep mode occurence is not normal behavior. Something is amiss.

You will need to do some diagnostics then.

Eliminate the operating system and its associated drivers.

Run the computer using a Win 9X startup disk and play Gorilla.bas and see what happens.

Let the machine run all day that way (eg, using Rolex) if needed.
