Laptop put to sleep while installing updates

My dad closed the lid of his laptop while it was installing updates before shutdown, and somehow the process was interrupted and never finished. Now, every time you shut down the laptop it tries to install these updates, but it cannot complete. No errors, just takes 45 minutes or more with no progress. I tried going onto microsoft update manually to install the updates, but ms update just eternally scans for new updates.

Is there a way to clear the updates that think they need installed on shutdown and install them manually?
