I'm thinking of replacing my desktop set up for a laptop due to lack of space in my new room.
I know dell usually offers great deals but their huge laptop lineup is so confusing.
Have not been keeping up with the different mobile chips so I can't really tell them apart either.

Right now, my desktop is a first gen p-4 2.6g with 512mb ram...
looking for something similar in speed. I plan to use use it to surf mostly...no graphic intensive games.

Any recommendations for a system under $1000? the cheaper the better and let me know how cheap they usually go for when Dell has their $750 off 1500 deals or something.

Thanks in advance.

check the hotdeal's section regularly and also this place as well. for the most ultra portability, the 700m will be the lappy of choice. and you will want a centrino (pentium-m) processor. it includes speedstep that will power down the speed of the processor when neccessary to save power. the celeron-m performs almost the same as the pentium-m, but is 1mb cache less and does not have speedstep, which gives no concrete reason to buy it if you are always on the go. do no buy memory upgrades from dell because they are overpriced, you can buy some at newegg cheaper and installing ram on a lappy is very easy.
