laptop proxy server

I am interested in constructing something like a laptop proxy server. is there a way that I can use my usb ports on the back of the laptop and convert it to something like an ethernet card? I don't know much about the laptop I am getting however I am pretty sure it only has one slot for a PCMCIA card, so this will be one ethernet jack. Is there a way to get another somehow? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

I'd check first, can't remember when I've seen a laptop with only one card slot.
Are you on dial up or broadband? Dialup you could use USB modem for web connection and ethernet card to upload to a hub.
