Laptop Processors

I am in the market to get a laptop. Obviously the Celeron based laptops are cheaper than the P3s. How much of a performance difference is there between a celeron and a mobile P3. I know there are new celerons out now, how about those? Are there any good sites with benchmark results? How about the difference between a duron and celeron?

Thanks.

You can always get a celeron based lappy and when you can afford it you can upgrade the chip to a P3. I have done this three times on my lappy. The chips are exspensive so it might be better to just get the fastest chip you can afford now.

is there much of a performance difference between the newer celerons and the P3s? Or is it worth the extra couple hundred $$?

Performance depends on whether you applications need more cache or not. Most of the PIIIs and Celerons run at 100Mhz front side bus, so the only difference is in the cache, 256Kb for PIII and 128Kb for Celeron. The newer PIII-m has 512K cache and runs at 133Mhz FSB, I am not sure how the newer Celerons stack up.

the old celeron was 128k and ran at 100bus (well the really old ones at 66bus) vs the 256k cache p3.

the cache bus on the celeron was like 128bit instead of 256bit also. so the celeron was a lot slower. like a celeron 700 would probably be like a p3-550 or 600 in speed.

not to mention no speed step.

the new celerons though are 256k and the new p3's are 512k. this is just like the desktop tualatin chips that come with 2 sizes of cache. the cache bus is the same for both 256bit. and both are 133 bus . so the difference isnt as much now, but the celerons still dont have speedstep
