my friend is having this problem with his gateway laptop...he tried installing a printer and the computer crapped out on him. It won't let him into windows stupid BSOD.It goes into physical memory dump before BSOD. any ideas?

Gateway ships a "Recovery CD" with all their systems... all you need to do is put the CD in the tray and reboot.

he's got says he's got data that he wants to back up though...that's the tough part reinstalling windows isn't that hard.

Remove the HDD from the Gateway, and get an adapter (2.5" to 3.5") and install it as a slave in another computer. You can then access all the data files and copy them onto other media. When you have saved all the critical stuff, then put the drive back in the Gateway and use the Restore CD.

I like corky-g's suggestion the best, But it is possible to install windows over itself without formatting the drive..I was able to do this with my sister's HP box with the recovery CD. It will give you the option of formatting or not. Good luck.
