Hey guys,

I'm thinking about getting a laptop, but I'm really confused by how they price them.

Skimming through newegg.com, and looking at their Acer line up, I'm looking at the notebooks w/ the Pentium M.

For $2,569 we get:
Pentium M 755 2GHz
15" LCD
Win XP Pro
512MB RAM
Radeon 9700 128MB
60GB
Super Multi Write Plus Drive
5 hrs battery
6.3lb

For $2,019 we get same thing except:
Pentium M 725 1.6GHz

$550 just for a 755 vs 725??

Then for $1659 we have:
Win XP Pro
40GB
DVD-ROM
5hrs

For $1344 we have the following changes:
Win XP Home
60GB
DVD+/-RW
2.5 hrs

Almost everything about the 2nd model is better except it uses XP Home (big deal), and half the battery life. For $300 cheaper!

Do these tradeoffs make sense to anyone else? Should I be looking for other features?

In your second comparison ... something is wrong....

the cheaper machine actually has a DVD Writer and the expensive one a DVD Rom...

Also, when laptops are concerned, price is often dictated by size, wieght and battery life rather than configuration...

The lighter and smaller machine will always be more expensive. Maybe you are not comparing sizes, just configs..

Are you comparing the same model? You cannot compare different models, as they will clearly be different in size and weight; even small differences in weight (i.e. 1 lb) make for a completely different user market.
