Laptop powers up, but won't boot, and black screen

When I turn on my dell inspiron 1545, the computer attempts to start, fails to completely start and then makes no noise. There is still power running to the computer because the power light remains on and the disc tray still opens. The computer seems to fail right before the screen turns on. Any help, greatly appreciated.

If you still got a warranty for your laptop - use it.
If not - try to clear CMOS (restoring the BIOS to factory settings)

Take out the battery, and plug the laptop to the power charger - does the problems still occurs?
