Laptop power supply question...

rudder

Lifer
I've got a Gateway solo computer with a dead PS. The gateway power supply outputs 19v at 2.64A. I've got another laptop power supply from HP that outputs 19v but 3.16 amps. i've interchanged power supplies on components that take milliamps sometimes going from 800 to 1000 and know that it doesn't cause any problems. Should I just cave in and spend $40-50 on a new power supply?

Not quite sure what you are talking about. I have a Gateway Solo, and it does not have a "power supply." Do mean the A/C Adapter? (The "brick.)

My A/C adapter oas an output of 19 vdc at 3.68 amps. The H-P adapter puts out a little less than is needed, but could be adequate. Better under than over! The critical difference is usually the connector. Laptops are all different. Targus makes a Universal a/c adapter . . . and it comes with an array of connectors.

Never seen one of those "bricks" go bad . . . this is my 5th laptop. I guess they do happen.

Accually it is better to be HIGH on the amperage rating. If it says iit can deliver TWICE the Amperage you need the computer will only draw what it needs. But if it will only produce half the comp win run poorly (if at all) and you may distroy the PS.

The other thing you need to check along with Voltage and Amperage is polarity of the plug. Is the postive the outer or inner ring? Make sure these match up! You can FRY your lappy if they don't!

Ha yes ac adapter. I guess the battery could be considered a power supply! But I am going to take the safe route and order an official gateway power supply.
