Laptop Power Issue--battery, AC, or other?

Trying to determine if something here needs a replacement. It's for someone else who's seeking my help. I already know what I'd do if I had other geeks to confirm with, but this'll have to do...

A lady who has no kids, dogs, or other disturbances in her home, claims that her computer suddenly wouldn't start up anymore a couple weeks ago. She gets ahold of me to take a look at it, and sure enough, it doesn't start--I hit the button, and the power button blinks very briefly. I notice that at the same time I do this, the battery/plug-in button will blink 8 times. If only the plug-in is in and the battery is removed, then it will blink like this over and over again, with a brief pause between the sets of 8 blinks. (If both sources of power are out, nothing happens, of course.)

To me, this means the battery's dead and needs to be replaced. But I've never had to do that with a laptop before. Perhaps this is an indicator of some other problem. The AC Adaptor seems to be in working order, and there's no damage anywhere.

Any thoughts? (The computer name is a Compaq Armada, series PP2040.)

Dunno if PP2040 is what you'd want--the model number is M700.

Also, when I push the battery charge button for testing (just found out about that), I see a full five LEDs. This doesn't seem very hopeful to me. What should I do?
