If I buy a laptop from Dell (Inspiron 8000), is it a possible task to change the os, or would that cause me more headaches than it's worth to save the money (buy ME system and use my copy of Win2K to upgrade)? I know EULA allows you to install on one laptop as well as your primary comp, so I wouldn't even be in trouble there, not that I really care.

Why not? As long as drivers are available for everything. Check to make sure you can find all the win2k drivers first. I know they probably don't tell you the brand of everything (modem for example), so it wouldn't hurt to ask them...

You shouldnt have any trouble changing the OS. Just poke around in the tech support area on the Dell web site, dload all the win2k drivers you need, and you should be good to go. Dell might even have step by step instructions on what you need to do to upgrade. I just changed over from WinME to Win2k on my Toshiba Satellite 2805-S402, it was pretty easy actually since Toshiba had step by step instructions on how to do it.

i installed win2k on my inspiron 8000 after i ordered it with ME
there were no problems - i made it dual boot just in case

You just have to find their drivers on the support site and download them
(make sure you use ME to dl the network drivers at least - with that, you should be able to dl the rest of the drivers after installing 2k)

Thanks guys, buy upgrading to 2k on my own, and using my previously bought copy of office 2k over their bloated office xp, I should be able to save quite a bit of dough.
