Laptop opti drive problems

I've got this old Sony PCG-GRX520 and the DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive will only read DVD's. When I put anything else in the drive doesn't see it. I was having other problems so I did a complete OS re-install and the problem remains. It didn't read anything at first but the entire drive comes out so a second battery can go there and after I took the drive out and slapped it back in DVD's started to read. Used drives are pretty cheap so I plan on trying that unless there is another direction to go in.
