Hi Folks Happy New Year, was hoping to get some advice on purchasing a laptop. Trying to stay within a $1600 budget. This laptop is for my younger brother, and i would appreciate any advice. Currently, i've been looking into IBM's t42 series and Dell's Inspiron 9200 series (XGA, heard to many horror stories with the WUXGA). Any suggestions would be great. Thanks in advance!!

What kind of things will your younger brother be doing? Will he be carrying it a lot, or relatively stationary? Will his skin break out in hives if he uses a Mac? Gotta elaborate, since not all laptops work for all people. :)

IBM T42 is my current favorite in the PC realm (yes I use a powerbook currently and love it). IBM has the best build quality, fugi has pretty decen build quality also. I can't say I'm a huge Dell fan, they have some decent products, but it seems that none of them are actually computers. However, I don't know what horror stories you heard about the WUXGA, I have a friend who's dad has a latitude D800 w/ that display and it's amazing. One of the few truly nice Dell laptops I've seen. The latitude series seems to be built a lot better IMHO (my roomate also has one). That's what I would go with if I were buying a Dell (other than that the 600m is pretty decent). Sony's are nice, but overpriced IMHO. Unless he needs the ultra small TR series, I'd skip them.
