Laptop onboard graphics - Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100

It's been awhile since I shopped for a laptop. The rule has always been:

Onboard graphics = crap
Separate card = good

But I know computer technology moves at the speed of light, and two years is an eternity. Was looking at a HP laptop that features Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100; I'm assuming it's an onboard solution.

Is it crap for gaming, even with 2GB of system memory? What I see offered these days for a discrete GPU solution in the under-$1500 market is the NVidia 8600/8700...dunno how great that is or if it's better than the latest and greatest onboard.

Thoughts?

Thanks, JackBurton. That's a nice little review on the chip. At least now I know some info on it...and that I probably don't want it for a gaming laptop.
