laptop not detecting hard drive

I have a Dell E1505 (purchased in 2005 so no more warranty) and now it's been relegated to the junk pile in my room. It first started when the original hard drive died and the laptop no longer detected the HD. I'm not sure if I can recover the data but its no biggy. So I buy a new hard drive from NewEgg. The day I got the new HD, I was able to reinstall Windows XP on it. I was working on installing drivers but I had to go to class, so I shut down the laptop to work on it later.

Later that night, I turned it on, and it wouldn't detect that hard drive either! GRR! Frustrating! There is one small screw missing to keep the HD in place (no idea when it has been missing and dunno where I can get a new one). I reseated the new HD but no go.

I really don't need it since I bought a new laptop in May, but my parents have been looking for houses online and I don't want them touching my new laptop. Any ideas what may be wrong or should I just scrap it and sell the laptop for parts?

Are there any error messages, or what?
If it's a SATA drive, check BIOS and make sure the SATA mode is not set to AHCI, that's sometimes a problem.
